Binoculars can also come in very large sizes but those are usually used by more professional viewers and need to be steadied by being placed on a tripod for support. Any larger than about 9 or 10, and the natural shake of the human hand will be magnified to such an extent that the image becomes difficult to see, and a tripod will be required. The first number tells the magnification factor. The binocular rating has two basic parameters, magnification and aperture.
Size matters when one considers the mode of birding. Folding in the eyepiece between observations will protect the eyepiece against scratches or other inadvertent damage. Microfibre lens cloths are made of tiny polyester or polyamide fibers that are a thousand times thinner than human hair.
Lots of advertisements attract customers by saying that the more powerful binoculars are, the better. Looking at the moon on occasion with a telescope looks like snow has dropped on the surface of the moon. Properly cared for, a good pair of binoculars will serve you for decades. A pair of binoculars that reads 7x50 can magnify things seven times stronger than they actually are with a 50mm objective lens.
The anti-reflective lens coating on compact binoculars reduces glare to a great extent. If you are only going to spend a couple of hundred dollars for binoculars don't even bother to look at the higher priced pairs. Maritime binoculars are now being crafted with state-of-the-art compasses, and lightweight water proof casing. Usually only magnification below 5X works well for night binoculars.
Do not waste your hard earned cash on a pair of cheap ones. You want to keep these for years to come so you might as well be comfortable.
