There are giant binoculars available with higher magnifications and apertures which are designed for astronomy use but you will certainly need a sturdy tripod or mount to use them. Generally, if the objective lens is 50 mm then it is considered to be a large binocular; if it is 42 mm, it is full size; if it is 32 mm, it is a mid size.
More magnification always means less field-of-view. Since the advent of the original coating, the technique has been refined, and there are several grades of lens coating available. The range of you binocular depends on three things, its gain, resolution and magnification. Compacts have objective lenses 25 mm or less.

Magnification is not the best way of choosing a telescope, as a clear image is more important then simply magnification.
When you travel, bring your binoculars, they will not add measurable weight to your luggage. You will also need to buy an atlas of the sky suited for astronomy, and a guide.
