Magnification over ten generally causes the binoculars to lose some image crispness. But when magnification is increased in binoculars, the brightness as well as the field of view decreases.
You want to become adept at identifying a bird correctly. The more important consideration should be the field of view. It is possible to get a nice pair of binoculars for a couple of hundred dollars so it is important to stick to your budget as it is equally possible to fall in love with a pair that cost a couple of thousand dollars. Mars and Venus on the horizon are a whole different picture when you can magnify your own vision.
