You will need a magnification factor of at least 7, maybe up to 10 if you have a steady hand. If you are using binoculars with a large, heavy objective lens it is helpful, if not necessary, to stabilize them by either resting them on something or mounting them on a tripod. Some of the greatest things you can see with a telescope are the moon and its craters.
But still, a good pair of night-vision binoculars will cost at least a thousand dollars. Field-of-view is determined by magnification and the focal lengths of the objective and eyepiece lenses. The waterproof models will be corrosion resistant and buoyant, not just repelling water from the lens. A few compact binoculars come filled with nitrogen and are waterproof.
Capturing as much of that as possible is good as it means all the available light is getting to where you want it. Take time in choosing a telescope, as most department store telescopes just do not fit the bill. The lower the light situation is, the more powerful night binocular you will need. Some of them have digital cameras built in, and you can photograph items a distance away.
There are also models with compasses built in, to keep you always on track when camping. Binoculars should last for many years to come.
